What Technology Should I Learn?
October 8, 2008
Many people interested in GE's IMLP program find themselves asking, "What technology skills do I need to get an interview and hopefully secure a job offer for the IMLP program?". There is not really a single correct answer to this question. There are many technologies that are important within GE's businesses. Skill sets such as networking, infrastructure and application architecture, application development, and IT security are important in the day to day operations of all GE businesses.
In addition to these competencies, there is a growing need for people familiar with technologies like service oriented architecture(SOA), ERP systems (i.e. Oracle e-Business suite, SAP ERP, and Microsoft Dynamics), Business Objects, Customer Relationship Management(i.e. Siebel and SalesForce.com), mobile technology, database administration, and data warehousing.
In my short time in IT, however, I have found that the most important technical competency for me has been systems integration. For most projects you work on, you will not have the luxury of building a system that is not required to interact with another system, whether that is requiring inputs from another system or feeding its outputs to another system. This is often the most difficult, yet most important parts of an IT project.
Finally, I leave you with one piece of advice. While it can never hurt to have a basic understanding of many of the IT competencies, you will be more valuable to your company if you are able to master one or more of the competencies.

I agree with this article. One of the good things about GE is diversity...at any level. This also means that GE searches for different IT backgorunds when hiring IMLPs, from people that studied Computer Science or Electrical Engineering to those that studied Maths or Physics.
Regarding the technologies described in the article, with no doubts, those are not only the most important but also the most impacting to the business. However, lately I am seeing more and more attention to OpenSource and Wed 2.0 technologies. As you see, IMLPs are aligned to the present and ready for the future ;-)
