TelePresence: The Newest Face to Face Meeting

Cisco TelePresenceMany of you have probably seen Cisco's commercial of the kids from opposite ends of the world taking place in a virtual staring contest.  If you haven't, you can see it below by clicking "Read the rest of this entry".  Now, the latest and greatest in virtual meetings has arrived at GE.

TelePresence by Cisco allows people in multiple locations to be at a virtual conference table, complete with the feel of being completely in-person.  Within GE, this allows people in Fairfield, CT, Niskayuna, NY, Washington, DC, Brussells, Belgium, Bangalore, India, and Shanghai, China to feel like they are at the same table, while being halfway around the world.  In addition to these six locations, there are more than 200 Cisco locations that are available for GE employees to use.

The TelePresence system uses high definition cameras along with special video and audio encryption to transmit near in-person quality with almost no latency

GE has adopted TelePresence as a way to save travel costs and increase face to face interaction.  No longer is there a need to travel more than seven thousand miles from Fairfield to Shanghai for a face to face meeting, when TelePresence will achieve the same thing.  In addition to the money saved, many valuable hours can be saved by having these virtual meetings.  As more of the focus moves towards global business and travel costs continue to increase, TelePresence is allowing GE to continue to grow, while keeping costs down.

This is something that Gary Reiner (GE's current CIO) has also talked about recently within his own personal blog. There, he's mentioned that GE is also actively exploring with Cisco the possibility of expanding Telepresence beyond simple conferencing, utilizing it for such things as Lean Workouts and even internal/external interviewing. Expect to see this technology expand in use throughout GE over the next couple of years.

Also heard that this system would be implemented in around 22 GE headquarters locations all around the world.

Nice systems...and really looking forward to checking it out in person!
