Working by the Beach

In my last rotation, I worked for a subsidiary of GE Aviation called Unison Industries. Unison makes ignitors, tubes, sensors, and other components that end up in or around aircraft engines. My project last rotation was to implement handheld barcode scanners in the stockroom of the Unison plant in Jacksonville, FL. To make things even more challenging, I worked remotely from Cincinnati for most of my rotation!

Luckily, I got to visit the Jacksonville plant in the beginning of my rotation, back in April. For a full week, I talked with the stockroom employees about the processes they complete every day and got a better idea of what requirements they had for the barcode scanners. I walked through each of the transactions with them and timed them to establish a baseline - that way we could tell how much better off they were once we introduced the scanners.

Then I spent most of the summer learning about the barcode scanners and the mobile interface to our ERP system. I worked with the system admins and some developers to make the scanners as user-friendly as possible. I even got to write some code to customize some of the screens.

At the end of my rotation, I flew down to Jacksonville again - this time to roll out the barcode scanners to the users. My trip was only two days, so I had to make the most of my time to train all of the users and make sure everything was working. Being able to hang out at the beach in the evenings was definitely a nice reward for finishing up my 2nd IMLP rotation - not to mention going to China for Senior Bootcamp right after that!
