Be involved, be an IMLP!
March 25, 2011
(C) Promethean PlanetThe Information Management Leadership Program is widely recognized as a premiere leadership and IT development program inside a strong company, GE. As an IMLP, this means being part of a great, global team that is spread out across all five continents while collaborating every day through the most advanced collaboration tools. Being an IMLP also means staying connected with all of the exciting events occurring globally within GE.
In order to successfully manage the huge amount of work needed to prepare these events, both collaboration and exposure to top management must be continuously enforced. As an IMLP, you could have the opportunity to participate and/or have a leading role in the organization of international job fairs, global meetings, and volunteering initiatives. Moreover, as part of your assignments, you will be responsible for delivering added value to the company. For example, you can be involved in updating and renovating official websites or writing for a globally known blog, like I’m doing right now.
You may also choose to be involved in the recruiting and onboarding process, mentoring, helping new people onboard with GE, or leading technical activities such as organizing webinars, trainings and global meetings. If you feel like doing some good networking activity, you can join the IMLP Alumni Relations Committee, where you will be in charge of organizing meetings and panels with program graduates from around the world who share their experiences and career tips. You may also want to work for the Professional Development Committee of IMLP and organize meetings with the CIOs in order to give other IMLPs the opportunity to be visible and exposed to leadership.
I have listed just a few of the many exciting opportunities within IMLP. As an IMLP, you will definitely have the opportunity to choose among a wide variety of activities and report your personal achievements to the top management. As a first rotation IMLP located in Florence, Italy, I volunteered last December in the Christmas bazaar, a fundraising event to help the local communities (you may want to read more in my previous post). I also have worked in the Communication Committee, which takes care of redesigning internal websites and promoting GE exposure and visibility into media channels. This means being in direct contact with the senior management to discuss the best solution to be pursued and the most important rewards GE is competing for. I have learned a lot about business writing and communication while having a lot of fun!
So, be ready to take an active role on proposing new ideas and interacting with different functions and teams by making decisions that really matter. Your voice will be taken in high consideration and you will definitely make a difference inside GE. You will grow inside the program while making the program grow itself. You will be able to see your ideas at work, and your imagination will be the key factor to make the program better every single day. Are you excited about this world of opportunities? Why don’t you apply for IMLP? Our IMLP crew will welcome you inside GE!
